Our History

After organizing in 1842, the Congregational Society looked at obtaining a permanent place to worship. At the time, they made an attempt to purchase the Episcopal Church, a beautiful stone building which is now the home of the Peter Greenwood Glassblowing Studio. Negotiations for that falling through, they hired Willard Wetmore to build the current building we meet in. This Greek Revival wood-frame structure was an exact copy of the Canton Baptist Church and finished in 1843. The same year that Charles Dickens published his well know Christmas story, A Christmas Carol, that we began presenting, as part of Christmas in Riverton in 1989. Proceeds from Our Christmas Carol benefit the Tiny Tim Fund, and help children and families in our area.
